Tredegar Arms Hotel & Restaurant - Steeped in Welsh history

Our Heritage

The Tredegar Arms stands proudly at the heart of Tredegar town, occupying a prominent position on Morgan Street within the historic “Circle” area of the town. Research by the Blaenau Gwent Heritage Forum suggests that the building was already established between 1802 and 1809, making it one of the earliest landmarks in Tredegar. Constructed in 1817 as a coach house, it has long been recognised as one of the town’s finest heritage assets. Today, following careful restoration, the Tredegar Arms blends its rich history with contemporary comfort, offering guests a truly unique place to stay and dine in South Wales.

The story of the Tredegar Arms begins in the early 19th century, when Tredegar was emerging as a thriving industrial town. Research from the Blaenau Gwent Heritage Forum suggests that an inn known as the Tredegar Arms already existed between 1802 and 1809, during the development of “The Circle,” the central hub of the town. The site quickly became an important social and commercial landmark, serving travellers, traders, and local residents as Tredegar grew around it.

In 1817, the current building was constructed as a coach house and inn. Its original purpose was to provide stabling and accommodation for travellers and stage-coach passengers passing through South Wales. Positioned on Morgan Street, at the heart of Tredegar, it became an essential stop for visitors and a symbol of the town’s growing prosperity.

Throughout the mid to late 19th century, the Tredegar Arms evolved into a busy public house and hotel. It became part of the Webbs Brewery of Aberbeeg estate, linking it to a wider network of Welsh inns. During the height of Tredegar’s industrial boom, the building served as a lively meeting place for local workers, merchants, and visitors. It was known for its hospitality, warmth, and central role in the town’s social life.

The Tredegar Arms continued to thrive throughout much of the 20th century, remaining a familiar landmark and a hub for community gatherings, celebrations, and events. It provided food, drink, and accommodation to residents and travellers alike, maintaining its status as a cornerstone of local life. However, as the town’s industries declined, the building gradually fell into disrepair and was eventually left vacant. By the early 2000s, it had become derelict and fire-damaged, though it remained recognised as one of Tredegar’s finest heritage assets.

A New Chapter

A new chapter began in 2017, when a £1.5 million restoration project was launched to save and restore the building to its former glory.  A new chapter began in 2017, when a £1.5 million restoration project was launched to save and restore the building to its former glory. Supported by the Townscape Heritage Initiative and private investment, the project included the installation of a new slate roof, the use of traditional lime render on the exterior, and the reinstatement of timber sash windows. Inside, the entire building was refurbished with careful attention to detail, ensuring that its character and historical integrity were preserved. Original materials were reused wherever possible — most notably, old floorboards were transformed into tabletops and decorative interior features, paying tribute to the building’s long history.

In October 2019, the Tredegar Arms reopened under local ownership, marking a proud moment in Tredegar’s heritage. The building was reintroduced as a boutique hotel, restaurant, and bar, combining historical character with modern comfort. Today, the Tredegar Arms offers ten luxury en-suite rooms, a stylish restaurant and bar, a sports bar, and a function suite accommodating up to seventy guests. It welcomes both leisure and business travellers, continuing its long-standing tradition of hospitality at the heart of the community.

From its beginnings as a 19th-century coach house to its present role as a beautifully restored boutique hotel, the Tredegar Arms stands as a symbol of Tredegar’s resilience, history, and pride.
